Wayfinding Signs

Interactive Museum Experience
Task:
For this project, I participated as a member of the Wayfinding Team for an annual Interactive Museum Event known as FUSE. For this event, the Wayfinding team was to ensure that attendees know how to navigate the venue. While others in this team were developing deliverables, such as maps of the location, I contributed to the wayfinding team by designing the wooden arrow and location signs.
Tools Used:
- Figma
- Adobe Illustrator
My Process:
1. Determine a style. Since I was tasked to design the multidirectional wayfinding signs from the start, this allowed me more time to figure out the style of signs. Below shows outlines of two variants of wooden signs.
2. Design Wood Pattern. After the client determined that they wanted me to proceed with the "chipped" sign design, I began developing a rugged wood pattern to use for the following iterations of the signs. This specific wood pattern takes subtle inspiration from the striped pattern of a tiger.
3. Find out location names and design icons. With the shape and design of the signs already created, I just had to add the location names of the exhibit areas. Since the theme for FUSE was camping, the names followed suit and were based off of different areas one may find at a campsite. After determining the names of the locations, I began to design icons for each area.
4. Prepare for printing. The final step of this project involved altering the colors of the signs to better contrast with the text as well as adding each location's icon to its corresponding sign. Once the sign designs were finalized, I imported the signs from Figma into Adobe Illustrator to get a better print quality. After printing the signs to scale, other wayfinding team members worked on cutting the prints and cardboard to imitate physical wooden wayfinding signs.
